Hi Tom, nice to hear from you.

Your letter is very interesting, and I have a lot of comments and quetions, but first I will address the most burning, did Greers son Henderson die in 1863 or was he your ancestor ?

My only two sources on Greer's Henderson are 1) 1850 Monroe County Census where he was listed as 13 years of age, living with his mother Lucinda, and 2) a family group sheet for Greer and Lucinda sent to me by Deanna Holm. (which I have attached)

Mote that the marriage of Henderson to Susanna Fisher listed on that sheet is in error. The Henderson who married Susanna was Greers brother, and it was his second marriage. They were listed in Monroe county in 1860 and 1870.

The sources listed for the sheet do not specify the facts they support, and I do not know if they were Deanna's sources, or sources cited by her source. I have copied her on this reply and she can address that question.

My initial reaction is that your Henderson is probably the son of Greer and Lucy, and the information I have posted is incorrect. We will see. That is presisely why I have freely used and cited information that I have not researched myself, it is out there to attract attention and create a discussion, so that facts can be sorted out. (Not to imply that
my research couldn't be brought into question also)..

I will now speak to some of the other item;

First your lineage, starting at the top. You lists Willam (d.1744) and Mary. The information I have seen indicates there were actually two Williams, a Sr. who died in 1744 and whose wife was named Joyce, and their son Wm. Jr., who probably married Mary Robinson. Wm. Sr. and Joyce also had a son Thomas, who would be the person you listed 2nd as "____?", and the father of James. I am considering extending my "conjecture context" upward (and back down in places) to include these individual, but am still digesting the information, which comes primarily from some pages of a book by Phyllis Laborde in 1990. She makes mention of the book "Callicoat Connections".

A word about Family Tree Maker. It has a wonderful interface, and I own and use it for reports and such. The reason I do not use it for my "hot" data is because it can not properly retrieve source information from GEDCOM. nor can it export it properly once entered. Its source info is held hostage by their data format, which is NOT fully GEDCOM compatible. There are other programs which will take your old data cleanly, and if you have a lot of cleanup to do you may want to look at other alternatives. This is just an FYI, if you are not concerned with GEDCOM sources FTW is an exellent choice.

About spelling variations; Most of our ancestors were illiterate. Each census year a differrent person collected the info. Our ancestor stated their name and the census taker spelled it however he thought it should be... For instance, Greer. 1820-Greer DILLON-1830-Graah Dilyon, 1840-Greer Dillian. There are thousands of other examples, and this is
why I ignore all spelling variations. As later generations became better educated, they likely retained the latest version "given" to them or their parents by various clerks an officials. There are many interesting cases, my Aunt's birth certificate is DILLION, and that is what she used. Her siblings used DILLON. Go figure.

As for the feud, I have not heard or read anything to support it. Context is probably important, it may well be true for a branch in your particular line, but as a blanket statement for the surname in general, I would say not likely. Do you know what the feud was over? It would be funny if it were a simple disagreement over the spelling!

Nathan and Jane; Great ! I wondered what the relationship was, and would be interested in details and sources.

Elizabeth J and Wright: There is an Elizabeth J listed with Henderson and Falishia in 1850, aged 31, too old to be their daughter... It is a fact that both were Dillons, but I am not yet convinced we know which one... Either this Eliz's Age was listed incorrectly, or it simply is another Elizabeth. I'm open to suggestions.

Hendersons death certificate naming "George" and "Lucia O'Tadlin", I can easily buy as a deathbed and/or grief stricken answer mistakenly heard and spelled. You never know. Very interesting.

Mae MOORE is certainly, if I had to guess, the authority on early Dillons. I (and others) can't wait for her book. I have a feeling she has some suprises in store for us all.

As for the migration folklore, again context is probably crutial. There were dozens of early DILLON families, many of which probably did not even know of each other. Even if they did, some probably did not know if they were related or how. Migration patterns can be established from facts, but certainly can not be applied to other lines. Again, perhaps true for your direct line, but certainly not all DIllions. Just keep it in mind and see if facts you discover bear it out. Regardless, it is very interesting, and notable simply because it is part of your collective family memory. My family is devoid of such memory, I was able to go back only to my second great grandfather, and stories didn't go that far...

Great to hear from you. Please lets continue with this.
