Benjamin Van Cleave b. 20 Jan 1771 d. 1840 married Sarah Kerns 1 Jan 1801 Shelby County KY was the son of John Van Cleave b. 1739 and Mary SHEPHERD, dau of Capt. Thomas SHEPHERD and Elizabeth Van Meter. Mary SHEPHERD Van Cleave and two of their daughters were killed by Indians 15 September 1781 KY. John married Rachel Demarest before 1785. Rachel was the widow of Gerardus Ryker who was killed in the same attack as Mary SHEPHERD Van Cleave. SOURCE: "The Van Cleave Family" by Wilson V. Ledley publ 1976 pgs. 96-105+
