Autobiography written by Mary (UVC.doc):

I was born at Timken Mercy Hospital in Canton, Ohio, United States, January 28, 1968. I have one older brother, John, who is three years older than me. He has a Bachelors Degree from Kent State Univeristy in Theatre and is currently the Managing Director for the Salem Community Theater in Salem, Ohio, United States. Both of my parents are still living and married to each other. My father is a retired driver of a shipping company called, Purolator and my mother is still a devoted housewife and mother.

My family and I lived in North Canton for the first six years of my life. Then my parents bought a cabin at Guilford Lake State Park. One year after they bought it, we winterized it and moved in year-round.

In my opinion, that lake is the best place for a child to grow up and because I grew up in the country, I developed a sense of appriciation for nature and all it has to offer. We had a big backyard with many trees, a dock to go swimming, a great view of the lake, and a motorboat to cruise around in. Our neighborhood was very safe. We were never bothered by outsiders and, because most of the houses were just summer cabins, there was hardly any neighbors around. There were a total of six kids in the neighborhood that lived there year around, so there was always someone for us to play with. We would spend our summer days swimming at the dock and our evenings at the neighbors' house playing boardgames.

Some of my hobbies and interests include music, Nintendo games, and collecting black pewter. But the thing I enjoy most is swimming. Even now that I am an adult I still swim every chance I get. I am a certified lifeguard working summers at a private golf club at home and I spend my evenings with my friends night swimming and playing boardgames.

Once I graduated high school, I spent one year at the Salem branch of Kent State University taking different classes to see what I wanted to be for the rest of my life. After a year, I decided to move to Canton, Ohio, United States with my best friend from high school and study Computer Programming at Stark Technical College. Three years later I graduated with an Associates Degree in Computer Applications.

While I was in school I worked at many different places including; The Original Cookie Company, Sears' Crystal Shop, Stark Technical College Bookstore, and IBM. But my favorite job was lifeguarding.

After graduation, I moved home and found a job at a manufacturing company in Salem, Ohio, United States. It wasn't a bad job concidering I was right out of school and had no experience. I was working in the programming department, although I did not do any programming.

I was happy living in Salem and working, but I promised myself that, once I got my Associates degree and found a job, I would go back to school to get my Bachelors degree. So, I started taking basic requirement classes at the Salem branch again. I wasn't sure what I wanted to do, all I did know was that, even though I really enjoy computers, it wasn't what I wanted to do for the rest of my life.

I was throwing around ideas in my head of majors that would let me do something constructive. I went to many advisors and talked to many people, but I still didn't know for sure. I was leaning toward some kind of environmental major, but I just wasn't sure enough to declare a major.

After major research, I decided on Environmental Science. Even though I was really sure, there was a small amount of doubt in the back of my mind until a lady from the government marked the "Big Tree" to be chopped down.

The "Big Tree" is a 50 year old Oak tree in the back of our yard that has been struck by lightening twice. Since it was struck by lighting twice, it leans towards the lake and is concidered a hazard.

My brother and I fought to keep the tree, but we couldn't save it. It was going and there wasn't anything we could do. But after everything was said and done and the men came to chopped other trees, our "Big Tree" was still standing. We don't know why it wasn't chopped down and we are not asking.

If there was any one person who helped me decide to study Environmental Science, it would have to be the lady from the government. If she hadn't marked our tree to be chopped down, I might have changed my major to something else. But since she did, I have no doubt that Environmental Science is what I want to study.
