Archie William Prinkey, 87, a longtime resident of Milford Center, died unexpectedly Wednesday, March 5, 2003, in the emergency room at Memorial Hospital of Union County.

He was retired after 50 years of farming in the Milford Center. He began his farm career in Mount Sterling and moved to the Milford Center area in 1947 with his young family, specializing in dairy and grain farming. He took much pride in his crops and ran his farm efficiently with a scheduled routine. He worked part-time at Nestle in Marysville and Ranco in Plain City. For more than 20 years, he raised and trained standardbred horses and raced them at Northfield Park, Scioto Downs and Lebanon Raceway.

He was a member of the United States Trotting Association, the Union County Farm Bureau, the Pharisburg United Methodist Church Windsor and Community Seniors. He was a past member of the Union County Fair Board and was recently appointed a charter trustee for the Community and Seasoned Citizens.

He was raised by his grandparents in a coal mining community where he lived in humble surroundings with meager belongings. As he grew and raised his family, he was devoted to centering his life on compassion and kindness. He was a dedicated father, loving husband, supportive neighbor and a quiet and considerate gentleman. He enjoyed his pets, Muffy and Pansy, feeding birds and playing cards.

He was born March 3, 1916, in Normalville, Pennsylvania, to the late Nelson and Jenny Stillwagon Prinkey and was predeceased in 1993 by his wife of 50 years, Mabel Mae Swyers Prinkey.

He is survived by three daughters, Mary Ellen (Melvin) Dillion of Marysville, Shirley (Warren) Wulff of East Liberty and Susan Ann Palmowski of Columbus; four grandchildren, Bill (Michelle) Elliott of Maine, Kevin (Krys) Wulff of Richwood, Stacey (Salvatore) D'Aquila of Connecticut and Doug (Jackie) Sabins of Marysville; 12 great-grandchildren, Cassie, Luke, Heidi, Ethan, Samantha, Alyx, Justin, Ashley, Patrick, Cody, Cory and Mary; seven brothers, Wayne Prinkey of Ashtabula and Jessie, Jay, Jack, John and Harold (Gladyce) Prinkey of Pennsylvania and Melvin McDowell of Florida; a sister, Denie Lilley of Pennsylvania; and a loving companion and caring friend, Miriam, C. Hildreth of Marysville.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Underwood Funeral Home. The Reverend Mo Dunn will officiate and burial will be beside his wife at Union Township Cemetery in Milford Center. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Hildreth Endowment Fund for the benefit of the Pharisburg United Methodist Church in care of the Community Foundation of Union County or to Memorial Hospital community meals.
