Richard S. Schaner Sr., 77, of Unionville center died Tuesday, May 21, 2002, at Memorial Hospital of Union County.

He was a retired locomotive shop foreman having worked 34 years with the New York Central, Penn Central and Conrail railroads. He came to Ohio from Michigan in 1951 to work for the village of Plain City. He was a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II, a life member and five times past commander of Darby Post 3268 and a member of American Legion Post 248 and the Military Order of the Cooties. He was a former longtime Unionville center Council member, a former trustee of the Pleasant Valley Fire District Board and a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Plain City. He was an outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting and fishing on his boat on Lake Michigan and Lake Erie. He especially enjoyed the time he spent camping with his wife, children and grandchildren. His hobbies included woodworking and attending the tractor pulls at Bowling Green and the Paul Bunyan festivals at Nelsonville.

He was born April 11, 1925, in Muskegon, Michigan, to the late Stephen J. and Cynthia Matthews Schaner.

He is survived by his wife, Catherine J. "Lena" Hernandez Schaner whom he married February 28, 1949, in Scottville, Michigan; seven children, Bernadette C. (Dale) Peterman of London, Richard S. (Debra) Schaner Jr. of Marysville, Joseph C. (Lynn) Schaner of Mechanicsburg, Robert P. (Angela) Schaner and Theresa M. (Jim) Weese of Unionville Center, Karl A. (Deborah Moore) Schaner of North Lewisburg, and Mary C. (Mike) Headlee of Plain City; 15 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Katherine Crosby of Petoskey, Michigan, and Joyce Goulet of Ludington, Michigan; a brother, Gerald (Donna) Schaner of Hart, Michigan; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph Catholic Church. The Reverend Patrick Toner will officiate and burial will be at the Darby Township Cemetery in Unionville Center where military honors will be conducted. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Ingram Funeral Home where a prayer service will be held at 8:30 p.m.

Pall bearers will be Brian Williams, Steve and Jeremy Schaner, Marcus Young, Eric Schaner, Josh Schaner, Matt Headlee and Billy Weese. Memorial contributions may be made to the Pleasant Valley Fire Department in care of the funeral home.
